  • Carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless gas, is a byproduct of the incomplete combustion of any carbon-containing material.1
  • Sources of CO include inadequate ventilation of heating sources, automobile exhaust, faulty furnaces, exposure to methylene chloride (an industrial solvent often used for cleaning and as paint thinner), as well as cigarette smoke and smoke from fires.2
  • Exposure to CO raises levels of circulating carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) in the blood.

  • Pulse CO-oximetry is a continuous and noninvasive method of measuring the levels of various blood constituents, including carbon monoxide (SpCO).
  • Measurements are taken by placing a sensor on a patient, usually on the fingertip for adults.
  • Accuracy Range: 1-40% with 3% ARMS.3
